A familiar stranger is a series of paintings where the artist invited to share a memory and answer the following:
“What is one specific moment from your past that shaped who you are today?”
The answers ranged from inspiring to incredibly painful. Eliana read through them and created images based on some of the answers that resonated with her. She began to paint a series of portraits and landscapes without using reference photographs. The resulting image is not a copy of reality, but an impression of it, as resemblance to the subject is not important to the artist.
By focusing on the story and illustrating its words, Eliana establishes a dialogue with her audience. The artist depicts her own vision of the subject and shapes the final image by drawing on the emotions felt during the creative process.
The texts and paintings illustrating this work are presented together below.
